ALES204 - BEST COURSE TO SHOW YOU A NEW COMMUNICATION WORLD

I was excited when I enrolled this course because it was the first course I took since I transferred to faculty of ALES. I didn’t know it was about communication and social medias until I read the syllabus. There are so many interesting contents that I have never seen before. I thought it was an academic course like physics or chemistry, then I found it is way more fun than that.

As a fresh girl of university, ALES 204 gave me what I really need, that is, communication skills and the application of social medias. In this course, I sign up my first Twitter account, first personal business Facebook page, first time to discover the most amazing online presentation tool Prezi! Prezi impressed me most because it is more flexible and colorful than Powerpoint, I can design whatever I want to express my thoughts. Without ALES204, I would never have the chance to get to know it. THANK YOU JESS! The other meaningful module is about personal resume. In the future, we all have to send resumes to lots of company to recommend ourselves to others. None of other academic courses would teach me how to write it except ALES 204. I learned things that I didn’t think of and it would help me through my life. What’s more, I record my first online AudioBoo about our CSL placement interview. Although it is just for 3 minutes, my partner and I were really satisfied because we were like real journalist while using it! Wikipedia is an online cyclopaedia that you can find almost everything on it. In China, we have the similar web like wikipedia but not this rich in information. I signed up to Wikipedia and edit some conception with partners, I felt that I’m a wikipedian now because people can benefit from what I did and I’m happy about that.

From other classmates’ blogs, I read a lot of articles about their hobbies, some up-coming events and their placement information. I felt that im not alone anymore because now I have many things to do online now. I met many new friends on Twitter and followed some nutritionist, which enrich my social life and knowledge of nutrition. It really contributes to my study field.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I walk to butterdome with sunglow shining, can’t stop imaging what am I going to learn in the class. It feels like that I was am empty jar and now it filled up by golden coins and full of joy. Jess is always so kind to us and she is more than a good friend to students. I just want to say thank you to Jess, my TA Courtney and everybody that I cooperated with in this term. Thank you for giving me this most unforgettable experience and made me benefit from it all my life. I also recommend ALES204 to my friends because they don’t want to miss this most exciting course ever!

CSL- Creating Sparkels for Life!

As a first year international student, life is tough as it is. Never have I thought about that I could have a chance to be a volunteer at CSL program. Ever since that, my life is totally changed.

The placement I chose is InfoLink in SU. I still remember the first step that I stepped in University of Alberta, lost all directions and completely attracted by the breath-taking sceneries. It was InfoLink who helped me at the first moment. They showed me the right when I lost and their warm, patient attitude comforted me so much. I wish one day I can be one of them and do the things they do to help others with all my sincereness. What a sweet surprise, when I selected ALES 204, I earned this chance to be a volunteer in InfoLink. I was too excited to say a word.

CSL is the place where I met my best partner ever and lots of excellent classmates. I was nervous at the first lab because there would be a self introduction. However, when our TA Courtney came in and looked at us with those beautiful blue eyes, I released. Courtney is a very dedicate TA who attach primary importance to our consideration. She always sends us very useful links about how to make Pecha Kucha, how to embed pictures to blog, how to use APA format to address references. With her help, my partner Wagma and I learned to use Prezi to make presentations. It was a really fun experience and I gained a lot of knowledge.

My partner Wagma is a senior student, she is the best partner I have ever had. At first I was a little bit confused about what we should do, she guided me and taught me how to get involved. We made a placement poster, a Powerpoint presentation, a Prezi presentation, two Prezi questionnaires for tutor registry and a formal tutor survey on BearsDen website. She can always figure things out when I was stuck. All these things we designed together are so precious to me. Our coordinator Melissa and Hallie are very friendly and kind to us. They introduced us to the big family of InfoLink and taught us every detail about it. My first volunteer session was tabling at the InfoLink desk in ETLC, he told me many interesting things and some important websites that I need to know. I also learned to use the cashier system to put information. At SUB InfoLink desk, Chris showed me how to go through the tutor registry website and it helped me a lot to do the tutor survey after that.

Every Friday afternoon we would get together to make new progress of our project. This made me feel my life is meaningful and the feeling that I can make contribution to my placement is so good. The CSL program not only gave me the experience of being involved in an university organization but also gave me the chance to met a plenty of great people. It is a sparkling memory of my life and I would cherish it forever. Let me say something about the CSL in my opinion, that is, creating sparkles for life!
